It All Begins Here

Leaves of the World

The Origin of the Echo

The Ancestral Soil

Tea is more than a beverage; it is a botanical miracle that has spent five millennia traveling from the wild, misty mountains of Southern Yunnan to the porcelain cups of the modern world. Its journey began as a whispered secret among scholars and monks ~ a wild infusion discovered by the legendary Emperor Shen Nong. Today, it stands as the most consumed drink on Earth, second only to water. But at TeaNa, we don’t just see a drink; we see a Landscape.

Terroir: The Soul of the Land

Much like a vintage wine, a leaf of tea is a physical record of the earth that birthed it. This concept of terroir ~ the unique alchemy of soil, altitude, rainfall, and sunlight. Written in 1211 by Zen Monk Eisai, Kissa Yójôki describes tea as growing in the mountains and valleys, holding within it the very spirit of the Earth.

When we source our Long Leaf teas, we are looking for the “Silent Wisdom” Whether grown in the tropical humidity of the Himalayas or the terraced hills of Japan, each cultivar represents the intention of the grower to coax a specific, shimmering resonance from the soil.

From the Camellia to the Cup

At its heart, all tea belongs to a single, beautiful species: The Camellia Sinensis. In our garden, we focus on the two great lineages:

  • Assamica: The bold, broad-leaved soul of the tropics- astringent, powerful, and rooted in warmth.

  • Sinenis: The small-leaved, sweet-tempered ancestor- aromatic, resilient, and capable of thriving even under a blanket of winter frost.

The Four Pillars: A Pilgrimage of the Leaf

To understand the TeaNa~Verse is to understand the geography of the spirit. Our journey across the great tea mountains is a search for resonance ~ from the misty, ancient slopes of the East to the sun-drenched highlands of the South.

The Heartland of China

We begin in the southwest, the cradle of all tea. Here, the broadleaved forests hide trees that have breathed for two millennia. From the “rock teas” of the Wuyishan mountains to the delicate Longjing of the East, China is a landscape of infinite nuance. In this heartland, tea is not just grown; it is a cultural golden age that has never ended, where every leaf is coaxed to release its unique character through the intentional hands of the artisan.

The Zen of Japan

Across the sea, the journey turns inward toward a near-obsession with the color green. Beneath the watchful eye of Mount Fuji, the Japanese tea mountains are a masterclass in the marriage of tradition and modernity. From the stone-ground Match flavored by Buddhist monks to the high-altitude Sencha of Shizuoka, the focus is on purity and aromatic intensity. It is a land where stillness is found in the whisk, and every cup is a meditation on the fleeting beauty of nature.

The Industry of India

In the foothills of the Himalayas and the tropical valleys of the Brahmaputra, the story shifts to scale and strength. India’s tea mountains were born of a global search for a “silver bullet” to a rising crisis. Today, it is a land of bold broadleaves ~ the Assamica variety that thrives in the heat and provides the world with its most robust, performance-driven infusions. It is a landscape of rugged beauty, where the tea bush is indigenous, resilient, and undeniably powerful.

The Resilience of Sri Lanka

Our journey concludes on the central massif of Sri Lanka, an island where tea was the “third choice” that became a national treasure. After a fungus devastated the coffee industry, the planters turned to the leaf. Divided into three zones ~ high-grown, mid-grown, and low-grown~ Sri Lankan tea is a story of topography and monsoons. From the delicate, “tippy” leaves of the highlands to the robust orthodox blacks, it is a testament to an industry that faced nationalization and disaster, only to emerge as a world leader in quality and quality control.

TeaNa’s Home Garden

In Rhythm with the Moon

In my own herbal garden, I follow the quit rhythm of the moon and the turning of the seasons. Seeds are planted during the waxing moon, when growth is drawn upwards into leaf, and the garden is tended with attention to timing, balance and the natural cycles that have guided growers for generations.

While the great tea traditions of China, Japan, India, and Sri Lanka are shaped by vast landscapes and histories, this garden is something smaller and deeply personal. Here, the work is slower, more intimate. Each stem of lemon balm, each curl of mint, each tender leaf is guided not only by season and soil, but by an older cadence written in light and shadow. It is a place of learning, care, and connection - where each plant is grown with intention, and every harvest reflects both the land it came from and the moment it was gathered. ~ Tin

Every leaf is my garden is planted with intention. For those who wish to follow the journey - from the first moon-lit seed to the final herbal harvest and learn gardening tips, the ‘Letters from the Garden’ subscription offers a behind-the-scenes look at my personal practice and botanical mastery.
